About me

My name is Marcella Klein. I am a Dutch woman with a lifelong passion for the Royal Navy past and present. It all started in secondary school, in the history classes early nineties. That was when I first heard about Horatio Nelson and the famous Battle of Trafalgar.

I became really passionate about the Age of Sail in general and the life of Nelson in particular. Also I developed a huge interest in his flagship HMS Victory and her career in the Royal Navy.

In 1997 when I was 21 years old, I went to Portsmouth for the very first time and I visited HMS Victory, at the time she still had her topmasts. It was hugely impressive, especially after years of just reading about both Nelson and HMS Victory. Of course it was the pre-internet age, so I got my information mainly from books and the BBC at that moment in time.

Since then, I have made many returns to Portsmouth. I go there about 4 or 5 times a year and I have collected a huge amount of books, DVDs, photos and memorabilia. On my many HMS Victory visits I also took (and still take) a lot of photos, they are all added to this website.

I decided to create this website, gathering in a central place all the information I could find throughout the internet and add my personal touch to it. All the photos of HMS Victory (except the historic ones) are taken by me. Also the photos in the Nelson Gallery are mine, all taken in 2019. In case there are other photos on this website missing credits , don’t hesitate to let me know.

More about me, apart from this passion for Nelson and HMS Victory I also have a huge interest in the Royal Navy in general, from the Age of Sail up till the present with the Queen Elizabeth Class aircraft carriers. I also make regular visits to Portsmouth to see and photograph the current RN fleet.

Other hobbies that I enjoy are photography in general, writing, citytrips, walking and music.

Hope you like my website, thanks for visiting!
